In the nineteenth century men were allowed to beat their wives as long as the stick was bigger than their thumb, a woman?usband had claim to all of her property once married, and women were paid half the wages of a man for the same job. These are just a few examples of why women thought the right to vote a necessary thing. Women were not allowed an education in areas such as medicine and law. They had no part in making any decisions dealing with the government. They also had to swear obedience to their husbands in their wedding ceremony.
